North Island Credit Union Celebrates 70th Anniversary with Special Event at Naval Base Coronado Branch
San Diego, Calif., July 12, 2010 — North Island Credit Union will celebrate its 70th Anniversary of encouraging thrift, offering credit for worthy purposes and providing products that meet the needs of its member-owners with a special event on Friday, July 16 at the credit union’s Naval Base Coronado Branch. All military and civil service personnel on base are welcome for a free BBQ lunch. A special anniversary gift will be made by the credit union to Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) to fund multiple programs for sailors and their families while stationed at North Island over the next year.
North Island Credit Union has a long, rich history serving the Navy in San Diego. The credit union was formed July 1940 as Naval Air Station San Diego Federal Credit Union, to provide credit union services to civil service personnel and their families on North Island Naval Air Station. During this time, North Island was a major U.S. base supporting operating forces in the Pacific–including over a dozen aircraft carriers, the Army, Marines, U.S. Coast Guard, and Seabees. The city of Coronado later became home to the aircraft repair and overhaul facility workers, to others who supported Navy operations, and to their families.
For over 70 years, the member-owners of North Island Credit Union have been Department of War, and then Defense Department, employees; Navy personnel; defense contractor employees; others in the armed services; family members, and in recent years, open to the general San Diego population. In fact, today’s 94,515 credit union members are in all 50 states, and in many locations beyond North America. With the Internet, and other technology and delivery channels, members everywhere continue taking advantage of North Island Credit Union services. As of December 2009, individual and business member deposits in the credit union total approximately $1.1 billion.
From a temporary trailer on base to 13 branches throughout San Diego, the credit union has grown with the community and has provided tens of thousands of San Diegans with services from their first auto loan to their retirement account.
“North Island Credit Union is proud to have been a part of San Diego’s years of service to the security and welfare of the citizens of the United States and the people of other nations around the world,” said John Tippets, president and CEO of North Island Credit Union. “As we celebrate our 70th anniversary, we look forward to a future of serving those who serve our country, making a positive impact on the lives of all North Island Credit Union member-owners, and being a contributing member of the San Diego community and economy.”
